Katie Bracher, creative director of Beitak Productions, explains why the business should win the home business category of the Guardian Small Business Showcase competition.
I didn’t want to relinquish my career ambitions when I became a single parent, but I didn’t know how I would follow the path I wanted without sacrificing my family life.
My home is a hub that connects all parts of my world! It is the base of my media production company, doing business internationally from a corner of my living room, and intertwined with my fairly complicated home and personal life.
It begins with my office in the corner of the living room, which expands to meetings around the dining room table, impromptu studio set-ups and Skype calls across the world as I project manage a team of freelance professionals.
The house is also home to six other adults, who are my lodgers, one of whom receives reduced rent for regular babysitting. I’ve networked at home with client connections from previous housemates and a housemate who is a freelance costume maker also uses the room as a studio! It’s an ongoing process of discovery and trying out new ideas and it’s giving me options that I never would have had if I had stuck with conventional employment.
All entries which meet the competition criteria are published and our judging panel select a shortlist of the top three for each category. Winners are announced at an awards ceremony in summer 2016.
