Setting up as a strengths coach from home in a new region has required me to use my own strengths to the fullest. Not everyone understands strengths-based psychology so I’ve had to reach out across the globe to connect with others to develop my practice, stay true to my ambition to set up a coaching and development practice, and to stick with it when there was no cashflow.
I’ve accessed webcasts, online forums, podcasts and audio books. I’ve listed myself with online coaching directories, written blogs and press releases, and championed strengths wherever I go.
When I was stuck getting clients, I started to help others for free in a coaching capacity, recognising talent and offering help building websites and sharing my newfound business knowledge with others who were also starting out.
In turn, I’ve been to gigs, had ceramics given to me, received social media advice, been offered lower-cost graphic design and printing and will soon have some proper photos for my website – all for free.
I’ve also learned to pace myself and focus on pull rather than push marketing and PR. Now that I have a handful of clients I feel like it’s finally really happening.
I’m working closely with other strengths coaches, hoping to raise the profile of strengths and positive psychology to increase productivity and a better quality of life.
