I was studying for my masters in clinical neurology at the University of Sheffield when I decided that I wanted to change direction in my career and start my own business.
I did much of the planning and paperwork while also writing my dissertation, and in September this year I founded Mopology Cleaning...and passed my masters. Not everybody was impressed – my parents didn’t see why I wanted to spend four years at university to become a ‘cleaner’, and the university faculty weren’t used to people studying in neurology and not wanting to pursue a career in that area.
The lack of support wasn’t the only obstacle. My home is a converted townhouse flat share, which was ideal for studying – the rent was cheap, and I could hide in the library when I needed quiet. However there were some slight problems with running a business there.
I share the house with professional males, with the flat downstairs home to a father and his very noisy toddler. Needless to say with this amount of people in the building it is neither clean, nor calm. I requested a desk for my bedroom, which for the first few months became my office, home, and storage facility. I would work overnight when noise was minimal, and often took over the dining room table during the day to make phone calls and send emails.
Now we have just secured enough contracts for me to be able to able to quit my part-time job and pursue the business full-time.
