Marcus Wilson, managing director of Little Fingers Organic Baby Food Co, explains why the business should win the home business category of the Guardian Small Business Showcase competition.
Based in the hills of West Yorkshire, Little Fingers Organic Baby Food Co. provide ‘real’ finger food for babies and toddlers. Our brand offers something completely new.
When Bobby was born three years ago, as busy new parents we realised there was a gap in the market for wholesome finger food with tangible nutritional benefits. So just over 12 months ago we created and launched Little Fingers Organic Baby Food Co.
We transformed our kitchen into a professional kitchen and started creating baby finger foods made from locally sourced, organic ingredients. We designed products to contain high levels of fresh fruit and vegetables so parents who were time starved or lacked confidence in the kitchen would be able to rely on Little Fingers. We knew that to create a sustainable business we had to be innovative to entice parents to try us. Therefore all of our products, from our Courgette Bites to our Apple & Sultana mini cakes, are completely new to market, we created a range design which is eye catching and enhances the life of our products.
Our approach was to create a sustainable but profitable business based from home to keep our overheads down and to enable us to remain in control. We initially sold our products to friends and their children who enthusiastically endorsed our products. The news quickly spread and we now supply Planet Organic and As Nature Intended as well as an online shop.
All entries which meet the competition criteria are published and our judging panel select a shortlist of the top three for each category. Winners are announced at an awards ceremony in summer 2016.
