Home births cancelled in Glasgow as midwife shortage bites

Home births have been suspended in Glasgow.

Health chiefs made the decision as it bids to cope with staff absences during the coronavirus outbreak.

Maternity staff will be concentrated in hospitals and pregnant women who had booked a home birth being contacted.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde also revealed that parenting classes have also been stopped, the Daily Record reports.

A spokeswoman said: "Regrettably, NHSGGC has taken a decision to suspend all home births.

"This is to allow us to concentrate our maternity staff in our hospitals to cover those who are absent from work because they are either self-isolating or symptomatic."

"Our midwives are personally contacting all women who were booked in to have their baby at home to explain how this will affect them."

Antenatal classes will continue, but other services will be also be affected.

The spokeswoman added: "Parentcraft classes have also stopped, but one-to-one help will be given to mums who need this - mostly post-natally.

"The Ready Steady Baby book has a wealth of education to support pregnant women and new mums.

"Online resources are also being looked into to help pregnant women, including those who are booked for a C-section.

"Antenatal visits will continue for women and again, we are exploring use of technology for some consultations.

"Any woman with concerns should speak directly to their named midwife."
