Home birth service suspended in Nottingham to protect people from virus

Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) is suspending its home birth service to protect families and staff from coronavirus.

Any women planning to have a home birth have been urged to contact their community midwife.

The decision was announced on Thursday, March 26 and is effective immediately.

Women at any stage of pregnancy have been placed in the higher risk category amid the Covid-19 outbreak and have been advised to self-isolate for 12 weeks.

A statement from NUH reads: "To help tackle the spread of Covid-19 and maintain a safe maternity service for all women and their families, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has taken the difficult decision to suspend the Homebirth service with immediate effect.

"We appreciate that this may cause you disappointment - if you were planning a homebirth please contact your community midwife to discuss further.

"NUH thank you for your patience and for your support in protecting your family and our staff at this time."
