Home Bargains lorry 'crashed into bridge' before police closed road

A Home Bargains lorry reportedly crashed into a bridge leaving a road blocked to cars and buses.

Police were called to Woodchurch Road, in Birkenhead , shortly after 7pm to reports that a large vehicle had crashed into a railway bridge near the ASDA supermarket.

It is believed that the lorry drove under the bridge before crashing, leaving debris from the lorry and bridge lying in the road.

The lorry did not get stuck, as images on social media show it parked at the side of the road after the crash, but parts of the roof could be seen in images taken of the incident.

A number of buses were diverted around the area and witnesses reported to the ECHO that the road was closed for a short people of time.

On Twitter, Stagecoach tweeted: "Due a police incident on Woodchurch road, services 41,42, 471 and 472 are currently diverting via M53 and Storeton Rd.

"This is towards Liverpool and Birkenhead, updates to follow. @Merseytravel"

People posting online said that they did not think that anyone had been injured in the collision but advised others to stay away from the area.

One man said: "Avoid Woodchurch Road near the Asda. Lorry has just hit the bridge and the roof has come off.

"The driver was out of the cab so think he was ok but traffic is pretty slow so would try and go round."
