Home Bargains baffles shoppers with price of giant 4.5kg Toblerone

If you're Christmas shopping, chances are you'll have considered Home Bargains as a contender for at least some of your presents.

The discount retailer is known for its purse-friendly offerings, and is often one of the first ports of call for savvy shoppers.

It may surprise you, then, to hear that Home Bargains has come under fire for the price of one of its most popular Christmas gifts.

Posting on Twitter, the retailer revealed that it is currently selling a giant bar of Toblerone, which weighs in at a whopping 4.5kg.

That's a lot of chocolate.

First reported by the Liverpool Echo, if you want to purchase one of these bad boys, it'll set you back £49 - though Home Bargains says the RRP is £73.99 - an apparent saving of £24.99.

Shoppers aren't happy with the price though, and have taken to social media to slam the retailer.

"I'd rather buy a few small ones. Probably cheaper that way and easier fit in mouth," said one.

Somebody else added: "£50 for a chocolate bar does the price include a chainsaw? As you'll need one to try break some off it."

"Who in their right mind would buy chocolate for £49?" questioned a third.

Yet another disgruntled shopper said: "I'd rather just get my weekly shopping than waste £50 on this."

But is it really worth the cost? We've crunched some numbers so you don't have to, and the answer is 'no'.

To have the same amount of chocolate as Home Bargains' 4.5kg bar you'd need to buy 12.5 of them, which, when each is priced at £3.50, works out at a cost of £43.75.

Asda is currently selling 360g bars of Toblerone for £3.50 each.

However, because you can't buy half a bar, you'd have to buy 13 - bringing the total to £45.50.

It's not that much cheaper when you look at it like that, and, if you ask me, a giant bar looks far more impressive, and it's worth the extra couple of quid if you're buying it as a Christmas present.
