Its long views across rugged country to the sea should be safe since this is within the North York Moors National Park, although planning reforms might menace these protected spaces. Extensive renovations have spruced the historic features of this £399,000 16th-century house and added modern indulgences. The downstairs rooms are lavishly beamed and several of them panelled and there are open fires in the study and master bedroom. This latter must share its en suite with the occupants of the other four double bedrooms whenever they feel like a soak in a tub due to a Jack and Jill arrangement of doors. The communal washroom has a shower only. The driveway is also a shared luxury. It sits in large gardens a mile from a beach.

Conservation status protects this hamlet in a haven of green fields between the M6 and Carlisle’s northern tentacles. This £320,000 home used to be a farmhouse. There are elaborate fireplaces in the three receptions, wide panelled doors and long sash windows, but the decor, though tidy, has yet to acknowledge the new millennium and you’ll probably want to renew the mod cons. While you’re at it, the attic room could become a fifth bedroom and you could dream up imaginative uses for the outdoor wash house. Its days commanding its own agricultural acres are long gone and the only remaining land is the front lawn and a cobbled yard at the back.

London’s villagey pockets exact a pricey premium from buyers wanting a retro landscape. In this case it’s £750,000 for a two-bedroom mid-terraced house with third-bedroom potential for daintily sized personages in the loft room. It’s handsome inside, but you don’t get much square footage for your money in North Kensington – a 10-ft-wide through reception and a courtyard garden. A utility room relieves pressure on the skinny kitchen. Beyond its front door is a pretty conservation area close to rail links at Queens Park and Ladbroke Grove.

This £475,000 house is one of the very few homes on this ancient shopping street in the centre of Canterbury. If you can cope with the lack of neighbours – and with the programme of upgrading needed – you’ll rejoice in a historic house close to the cathedral and laden with beams, stained glass, open studwork and panelling. You can see the cathedral from the third bedroom on the top floor and forget the city in the enclosed courtyard behind. There are three receptions, three large bedrooms and a handsome brick outbuilding in the courtyard.

This is a wooded area where building is restricted so the natural surroundings of this development in the mountains 70km from Antalya airport should, in theory, be preserved. The remaining two-bedroom semi-detached homes, built in traditional Turkish style with a wooden-chalet feel inside, absorb the pine wood vistas all round and share a swimming pool. It’s 15 minutes from here to the sea. Unfurnished houses are £83,000. Add £5,000 for the two with furnishings.
