Home Alone reboot starring Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney gets release date from Disney Plus

Disney Plus

The Home Alone reboot finally has a release date.

The film, titled Home Sweet Home Alone, debuts on Disney Plus on 12 November, in time for the Christmas season.

Jojo Rabbit star Archie Yates, 12, will play the leading role of Max Mercer, a clever child who is left at home while his family is on a trip in Japan.

The supporting cast includes Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Ellie Kemper, Deadpool 2 actor Rob Delaney, and Saturday Night Live comedian Kenan Thompson.

In a recent interview, Thompson explained that the film had to halt production during the pandemic.

“It was a long shoot,” he explained to Andy Cohen. “It started in Canada and then got shut down and came back around because of the pandemic and stuff, so it’s been very splotchy, I guess, as far as trying to get it done is concerned.”

The film’s production was first announced in 2019. It is directed by British comedian Dan Mazer, who was the co-writer and co-producer of Sacha Baron Cohen films Ali G, Brüno and Borat.

The film is based on the 1990 film directed by Chris Columbus, starring Macaulay Culkin as rich kid Kevin McCallister, who abandoned at home by accident when his family go on holiday to Paris.

Left to fend for himself, Kevin manages to thwart two robbers (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern) who are plotting to rob what they believe to be an empty house.

A sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York was released in 1992 with the original cast. Last year, a parody called Stoned Alone, directed by Ryan Reynolds, caused controversy after it was called “an insult to the art of cinema”.
