Home abandoned for 20 years becomes attraction due to huge stack of Marmite jars

A home which has been empty for 20 years after being abandoned has become a bizarre attraction for Marmite lovers - because it is full of jars of the tangy black stuff.

The weird cottage was left empty by a man who was dubbed the "Neighbour from Hell" and was taken to court on several occasions for making life for his neighbours impossible.

Neighbours in the sleepy Suffolk village of Monks Eleigh near Sudbury, were even forced to move because of his bizarre anti-social behaviour.

He has been taken to court several times and even served a short prison term for breaking a restraining order telling him not to cause a nuisance to his neighbours.

The neighbour was accused of damaging their homes, blocking the road, throwing rubbish into their gardens and painting his name on the lane.

He was later moved to another village nearby - but again was forced to leave after frightening and upsetting his neighbours.

But now his almost-derelict cottage has become a magnet for enthusiasts who explore empty building.

Inside they have found evidence of his huge appetite for the famous black extract.

But what is fascinating the explorers is the huge collection of Marmite jars, some piled into towers.

It is such an interest on exploration sites that the property is now dubbed "Marmite Cottage".

One villager said: "He really was the classic Neighbour from Hell.

"He seemed determined to upset everyone in the village - and succeeded. We were all very glad and relieved to see the back of him.

"But his cottage has become a complete eye-sore and is now in a dangerous condition - it really is an eyesore but we are getting lots of people turning up to explore it - it's very weird."

Marmite was developed more than 100 years ago by a food scientist looking for a way to use the yeast by-product of the beer brewing process.

Lovers of the tangy spread now buy more than 11 million jars every year.
