Man charged with driving off in van with girl, 2, inside

Dec. 01--A man was charged with kidnapping after police say he stole a van with a 2-year-old girl inside and led police on a six-mile chase.

Lamont Robinson, 23, was also charged with felony counts of aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle and aggravated fleeing, according to police. He was also charged with a misdemeanor count of driving without an issued license and a misdemeanor count of fleeing and attempting to elude police.

The incident started around 8:50 p.m. Sunday when a man entered a business in the 3900 block of West Cermak Road in the Little Village neighborhood and left his white van running outside, his 2-year-old daughter in the back seat, police said.

Robinson jumped into the van and sped off, police said.

Officers chased the van to Logan Boulevard and California Avenue, where they stopped it and took Robinson into custody, according to police.

As a precaution, the 2-year-old girl was taken to Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, where she was treated and released, police said.

During the pursuit, a police squad car collided with another vehicle near 2800 block of South Kostner Avenue, according to police. Police previously said the crash happened near Logan and California.

Two Chicago police officers and a male driver of the other vehicle were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, the release said.

Robinson, of the 3400 block of West Polk Street, is scheduled to appear in Cook County bond court Tuesday.
