Holywood's historic maypole replaced eight months after original destroyed in a storm

Holywood's historic maypole has been replaced after the original was destroyed earlier this year in a storm.

A large section of the old maypole crashed to the ground during a storm back in February, with rotten wood scattered around the road and pedestrian crossing in the Co Down town.

However, a local MLA has expressed his delight now that the maypole has been replaced with a brand new one after eight months.

North Down DUP MLA, Stephen Dunne, added that he has been regularly campaigning for this since the old maypole came crashing down.

He said: "I am disappointed that it has taken some eight months for Council to get the new maypole in place, however it is vital that a proper maintenance programme is now put in place to service the maypole on an ongoing basis going forward.

"There was real gap in the town without the maypole as it is such a central part of its unique character.

"The maypole is such a landmark and iconic feature of Holywood and it is the only remaining maypole in Ireland, therefore it is vital that we preserve it for future generations.

"Hopefully we can all once again enjoy May Day Fairs in the town, including the famous maypole dancing, which takes place with local school children every year, and has done, down through so many years and generations."
