Main Belfast Road reopens following multi-vehicle collision

The main Belfast Road at Holywood has reopened following an earlier traffic collision.

It is understood a number of cars and two vans were involved in a collision in the area at The Esplanade junction.

A number of people were taken to hospital and it's understood no-one suffered life threatening injuries.

North Down DUP MLA Gordon Dunne expressed his alarm at the incident and called for more investment.

He said: "We have been working with DfI Roads to get improvements to this section of roadway and especially the local residents who live on the roadway who have to enter and leave their driveways everyday directly onto the section of A2 adjacent to the railway station. This key section of road has been closed for some time.

"There has been recent changes to the phasing of the traffic light junctions at Shore Road and Kinnegar Road and I believe they have only added to the problem of traffic management at this junction and the adjacent junction at Sullivan Place.

"More resources need to be invested by the Department for Infrastructure on this very busy section of A2 Dual Carriageway before lives are lost or serious injury caused to those using and living nearby this very busy section of road."
