Holyroodhouse lawns looking untamed at Queen’s Scottish home ahead of reopening

The Queen’s lawn at Holyrood could use a bit of care and attention, new pictures reveal.

The grounds of Her Majesty’s Scottish Residence of Holyroodhouse Palace look a little neglected in new photographs taken from nearby Holyrood Park.

The pictures show long, brown grass on the palace lawns, a stark contrast to the lush green turf enjoyed by the public just over the garden wall in Holyrood Park.

The Royal Collection Trust said the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Queen's Galleries in Edinburgh would welcome people from July 23.

Needs a trim - the brown lawns of Holyroodhouse Palace, the Queen's Scottish home, compared with the lush green grounds of Holyrood Park just over the wall (Joe Smith)

The palace shut its doors to the public in March as lockdown rules came into effect.

The lawns, which host 8000 guests during the Queen's annual Scottish garden party, appear to have gone un-trimmed for a while - perhaps due to lockdown staffing shortages.

The garden party is cancelled this year thanks to Covid-19 but surely the Queen will want her lawns looking their greenest before the crowds return later this month?

Edinburgh Live has asked The Royal Collection Trust for a comment.
