HOLYROOD 2021: SNP secure Coatbridge & Chryston seat

Fulton MacGregor retained his Coatbridge & Chryston seat for the SNP with a more than doubled majority.

The incumbent MSP earned a second term at Holyrood after polling 20,577 votes to beat second-placed Labour candidate, local councillor Michael McPake, who polled 11,140.

Mr MacGregor's new majority of 9437 is an increase from the 3779 he achieved in 2016 when winning the constituency for the first time from Labour.

Gordon Macdonald of the Conservatives came third with 3028 votes, with Mhairi MacDonald of the Liberal Democrats earning 622 and Leo Lanahan of the Scottish Family Party polling 411.

The returning MSP thanked his supporters, fellow candidates and election officials, and said: "I want to thank the good people of Coatbridge Chryston for the honour and privilege of electing me, and I promise to stand up for everybody in the constituency."

Coatbridge & Chryston's result was declared at 4.15pm after a count lasting more than seven hours at Ravenscraig sports centre in North Lanarkshire.

A total of 63.11 per cent of voters cast their ballots, up nearly 10 per cent on the constituency's turnout for the 2016 Holyrood election.
