HOLYROOD 2021: Labour fightback not enough to take Rutherglen

Clare Haughey has been re-elected as MSP for Rutherglen.

An increased turnout coupled with a one point swing in the SNP candidate’s favour saw her pick up more than half the vote.

Ms Haughey polled 20,249 votes while Labour’s James Kelly came second with 15,083 for a majority of 5166.

Conservative candidate Lynne Nailon came third with 3663, ahead of Liberal Democrat candidate Sheila Thomson on 1112.

After the result, Ms Haughey said: “I’m absolutely delighted and completely honoured to be re-elected for the Rutherglen constituency.

“I’m just so delighted that the people of my home town have decided that they want me to be their MSP again.

"I’ll continue to work hard day in and day out to make sure that I represent their interest.

“We will be back at work as soon as I am sworn in again as an MSP.”
