HOLYROOD 2021: Airdrie and Coatbridge polls see increased turnout

Voter turnout is up by nearly 10 per cent in the first two North Lanarkshire constituencies to count ballots in the Scottish Parliament election.

Turnout in Coatbridge & Chryston for yesterday's poll was 63.11 per cent, while the figure for neighbouring Airdrie & Shotts was 58.9 per cent.

Official figures were announced by returning officer Des Murray at 1.30pm at the Ravenscraig count centre, where the sorting and counting of ballot papers has been in progress since 9am following yesterday's poll.

The turnout figures show respective increases of 9.7 and 9.4 per cent on the 2016 election, when Fulton MacGregor won Coatbridge for the SNP and party colleague Alex Neil retained his Airdrie constituency.

Coatbridge has an electorate of 58,827 and Airdrie has 54,153 eligible voters.
