Holy Spirits: Latest Dublin Wetherspoons will feature 'confession cubicles' when it opens next month

If you’re turning too much water into wine, there’s no need to worry as the newest Wetherspoons in Dublin will have confession boxes for anyone committing any sins when pubs reopen.

The €50 million hotel is set to open on Camden Street next month to coincide with the anticipated lifting of COVID restrictions.

It was developed on the site of a convent and a terrace of late-Georgian city dwellings and the ambiance of the chapel of the former Convent have been preserved.

The 89-bed development will include the conservation of a 19th century circular stained-glass window considered to be the work of John Earley who had a studio on the site.

And the Holy Spirits will be present as snugs in the bar are designed to resemble confession cubicles.

The Camden Street hotel will be known as Keavan’s Port Hotel.

The historic stained-glass window conservation were not been included in the original plans but Wetherspoons later assured the city council it would be restored and preserved.

The exciting new business will have two bars and two enclosed courtyards creating 200 full-time and part-time jobs.

One of the bars will be located on the lower ground floor with the other at ground level within the gazed atrium.

The famous company currently has five pubs in Dublin: The Silver Penny on Lower Abbey Street; The Three Tun Tavern in Carysfort Avenue, Blackrock; The Forty Foot in The Pavilion Centre, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire; The Great Wood at Westend Shopping Park, Blanchardstown and The Old Borough in Main Street, Swords.

Speaking about the announcement, Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: “We are looking forward to opening our new pub and hotel in Dublin.

“It is the company’s biggest single investment on a site and will also house its largest hotel.

“The project has gone back a few months as building work was put on hold due to COVID-19, however, we are delighted that building work is once again underway.

“We believe the pub and hotel will be a great asset to Dublin and hopefully it will act as a catalyst for other businesses to invest in the city.”
