Holy Island Cycle Ride invites you get on your bike over May Bank Holiday weekend

Organisers are gearing up to host the Holy Island cycle ride over the May Bank Holiday weekend and, as far as bike events go, it's going to be hard to beat.

The May 25 ride, hosted by Northumberland National Park, will be taking cyclists thought some of the most stunning of locations as the route follows the causeway onto Lindisfarne .

Those who sign up to take part are told they will be "following in the footsteps of St Cuthbert" as the scenic ride takes in the island's famous views over its 39-mile course.

It will begin at 10am on the day from Wooler Milk Bar on Brewery Road where cyclists will be able to fuel up on coffee and breakfast.

Then, operating within the causeway's safe crossing times, it will take them all the way to Holy Island and back.

There will be short stop-offs for rests then time to enjoy lunch on the island, where cyclists will be able to take advantage of the cafes and pubs unless they prefer to take a packed meal along with them.

And among the island's famous attractions they can chose to visit is Lindisfarne Priory - and English Heritage members are reminded to take their membership cards if they plan to schedule in a visit - and, if opening times work out, Lindisfarne Castle with its Gertrude Jekyll walled garden.

The all-road ride, which is described as moderate with some strenuous climbs, will be complete around 5pm.

It is being run by Wooler Cycle Hub on behalf of Northumberland National Park Authority whose Foundation - a charity which works to safeguard the future of the North East’s unspoilt landscapes - will benefit from the voluntary donations the event is requesting in lieu of entry fee. The suggestion is £5.

Anyone interested in taking part should fill in their contact details and chosen race here or call 01668 283 703. To examine the route from Wooler see here .
