Holy Cross Girls' Primary School wins 'best club' award

A club at a North Belfast school has been crowned the best in Northern Ireland.

Holy Cross Girls Primary school in Ardoyne was voted by a panel of judges as the best breakfast club in the annual Kellogg's breakfast club awards.

They've won a £1000 prize as part of the competition.

At Holy Cross, the children arrive at school to healthy breakfasts and smiling faces.

The children are able to all eat together, participate in activities and there is a quiet area to read and do homework.

Head teacher, Maura McNally said: “We are delighted and incredibly proud to have won the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards.

"The breakfast club is invaluable to the children. Some children don't get breakfast at home due to family circumstances. We provide a nutritious meal to help them settle into learning."

Around 25 pupils attend the breakfast club each day – after breakfast the children create artwork about healthy food which is displayed around the canteen.

Holy Cross Girls’ Primary School will spend its winnings on providing further support for their breakfast club supervisor.

Chris Silcock, VP and chief of Kellogg’s UK & Ireland, said: "I have had the opportunity to see the amazing work breakfast clubs do first hand. Now, more than ever, breakfast clubs offer a lifeline for so many families. They support working parents, feed hungry children and offer informal social and academic learning opportunities.

"The breakfast club awards is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the incredible and vital these clubs make across the UK. I look forward to congratulating the pupils and breakfast club leaders at the award ceremony."
