Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds' lovely gesture as he vows to get Wrexham legend to Wembley amid dementia fight

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has backed a campaign to get former Dragons captain Gareth Davies to Wembley.

Phil Parkinson's men booked their place in the FA Trophy final with a 2-0 win over National League rivals Stockport County last week. They will now meet Bromley under the Wembley arch next month.

It promises to be a special day for Wrexham fans, many of whom are excited about what the future may hold under the ownership of Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney, with promotion back to the Football League clearly a key ambition. However, the new era hasn't dampened support for those that have played their part in this club's rich history.

Former central defender Davies played for Wrexham for his entire 16-year career, making nearly 500 appearances for the club. He was also capped three times by Wales.

Sadly, in recent years, the 72-year-old's health has declined, with Davies currently wheelchair bound, living in a local care home as he battles dementia. Now, Martin Evans, whose wife used to take care of Davies, has launched a bid to get him to Wembley as the club's guest of honour.

Evans told leaderlive : "I heard of how he was and thought it would be a fantastic idea to try and help such a highly respected club legend have a day out to Wembley.

"And a lot of the comments I read on my post were all about how much of a great player he was and a lovely person - my wife agrees that he was one of the nicest people she had ever met."

The campaign has gathered momentum online in recent days, with Ruth Dodsworth among those to show their support. Now, Reynolds has confirmed that the club will do what they can to ensure Davies gets to Wembley.

Taking to Twitter, the Deadpool star said: "Rob and I will make sure Gareth makes it to Wembley in comfort. He showed up for Wrexham and we’ll show up for him. #GarethIsGoingToWembley."

Wrexham take on Bromley in the FA Trophy final on May 22.
