Hollywood star Patrick Bergin says he hasn't had a drink in five years

Hollywood star Patrick Bergin told how he hasn’t had a drink in five years, admitting his partner Helen Goldin is keeping him on the straight and narrow.

The 67-year old previously opened up about quitting drink after Pogues singer Shane MacGowan told him he was getting too fond of it.

Patrick told the Irish Mirror: “I do my best to keep as fit as possible, I haven’t had a drink in five years, that’s a good one for me.”

Best known for blockbuster, Sleeping with the Enemy, starring opposite Julia Roberts, the veteran actor said having his kindred spirit Helen Goldin by his side has kept him grounded.

He said: “To have Helen Goldin keep me on a strict regime has been incredible.”

Staying off the booze has given him a new lease of life he adds: “It’s great, I’d recommend it, I feel much better absolutely no question.”

The star was keeping tight lipped about whether wedding bells are looming.

He quipped: “She got a broken a hip and I got a broken ankle in the relationship so let’s just say we’re ankle over hip in love.

“We know each other 20 years and we’ve been together three years, she is an angel.

“We’re partners in life and on the road, you can mix business and pleasure.”

The movie star and singer has made over 130 movies and told how he still loves rock n’ roll.

He said: “I still play rock ‘n’ roll, I’m playing a gig at the end of the month in The Shed, New Bermingham, County Tipperary.”

 

The famous actor said he has no plans to retire and hopes his latest hit show will make it all the way to Broadway.

He said: “Spell of the Blarney Stone is a script I found in a drawer, unread and used for a 100 years.

“I just did a musical, we’re doing it right now, we’re on stage in Cork Opera House – on the 29th.

“I hope it will go to Broadway next but before that we’re off to Mullingar.”

“I’ve another Western left in me and I’ve a couple of scripts that I’d like to work on in the next few years, I’m still available for work.”

Singing is his true love he adds: “I write a lot of material, I was number one at Christmas singing and a couple of my other songs have been minor hits in Ireland over the years.

 

Commenting on his recent movie roles he added: “There’s a movie coming up where I’ll play a fiddle player, Hide and Seek and another film, There you will find me.

Mr Bergin and his partner Helen, recently launched Dogs Trust Legacy Garden where bereaved dog owners can honour their four legged friend with a commemorative dog tag.

He said: “Helen has a couple of poodles and Shiloh passed away recently and so it’s a joy, an acknowledgement to hang his little medal in a memorial garden.”
