Hollywood star Mark Ruffalo calls out Mary Lou McDonald over fracking ban bill

Avengers actor Mark Ruffalo has called out Sinn Fein leaders Mary Lou McDonald and Michelle O'Neill on Twitter over their bill to ban fracking.

The star, who is known for his role as Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, has been an environmental activist for some years now and regularly speaks out on issues relating to climate change.

Last week, Sinn Fein announced their bill to ban fracking at the Northern Ireland Assembly.

But many people, including Ruffalo, are now calling on party leaders to take more action.

Ruffalo retweeted a message from the environmental group Friends of the Earth, saying: "@sinnfeinireland cannot use their #frackingban as election window dressing. They must #banfrackingnow by voting for policy to ban petroleum licenses for drilling & fracking in the next few days/weeks."

The group called Sinn Fein's bill "meaningless without commitment to prevent Stormont Executive adopting a policy that could grant licences within weeks."

They added: "You can give communities the assurance they need now."

The 13 Going on 30 star has previously involved him in Irish political issues relating to the environment.

Last June, the actor was enlisted to participate in a live stream seminar to discuss fracking by The Green Party. The aim of the seminar was also to convince members of the party to vote in favour of the party’s deal with Fianna Fail and Fine Gael to form a government.

Ruffalo urged Irish people to oppose the importation of fracked gas during the Zoom seminar.
