Hollywood star Jason Momoa has said it was “surreal” to star in the new Supergirl film and said he “loves” his character.

The American actor, 46, plays intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in the sci-fi action film who must join forces with reluctant anti-hero Supergirl (Milly Alcock) to fight for vengeance and justice.

Momoa has been outspoken about how playing the character is a childhood dream, and in an interview with the Press Association, he reflected on how “crazy” it was to step into the role.

The star said: “I think the first scene was when I got on the bike and we ride in, and that’s your introductory scene – riding in on the on the space hog, fireballs going off, chaos, and you’re throwing the gut hook.

“It was… I mean, it’s surreal.

“When you put the whole outfit on, like everyone’s looking at me and you just kind of… it’s crazy, because you’re like ‘Lobo is standing in front of me’. It’s full-on.”

Momoa, who is no stranger to superhero films, having previously starred in Aquaman, explained why his new role excites him and said: “I just think the rebels and the anti-heroes are just fun to me.

“I like Superman, I like the worlds and stuff like that, but that’s not someone I would play.

“I love playing a character like this, he’s just a menace. It’s just fun to do those kinds of roles.”

The star added that he hopes fans will “fall in love” with the latest Supergirl franchise and expressed his desire to “make more” films.

Momoa looked sharp in an all-black suit, waistcoat and t-shirt during the fan event at Cineworld Leicester Square in London, and was flanked by his co-star Alcock, who wowed crowds in a chic white dress.

Alcock similarly expressed her excitement for the upcoming film, praising the “unconventional” nature of her character as what made the role of Supergirl so appealing.

The Australian actress told PA: “I really just wanted to bring humility, heart, grit, and sincerity.”

The star, who has also appeared in House Of The Dragon, also addressed the criticism she has received for playing a female superhero and said: “I think that sometimes people have made up their minds, but I hope that I can change their minds and surprise them.

“Ultimately, at the end of the day, I love to do what I do – even if nobody saw it.

“For me, it’s just a learning lesson and a stepping stone, and a natural part of life is that people aren’t going to like you.”

Supergirl will be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on June 25.
