The Hollywood production team behind films such as Uncut Gems and Ex-Machina have snapped up the rights for Glasgow-born author Douglas Stuart's Booker Prize-winning debut novel Shuggie Bain.
A24 and Scott Rudin Production, whose television credits include HBO Emmy-winning series Euphoria and the Golden-Globe winning and Emmy nominee Ramy, will adapt the highly-acclaimed novel for the small screen, according to Variety.
The book, which praised earlier this year by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, follows a boy growing up in poverty in 1980s Glasgow with a mother who is battling addiction.
In a statement, author Douglas Stuart said: "I am thrilled to be partnering with A24 and Scott Rudin Productions in bringing ‘Shuggie Bain’ to the screen.
"I often thought of the book in cinematic terms, and the glamorous, calamitous Agnes Bain certainly believes herself to be the star of her own movie. This is a chance to show the city of Glasgow with all her tenacity and unsinkable spirit, and to celebrate the love and hope between Shuggie and Agnes."
Scott Rudin and Eli Bush will produce the TV show, with Stuart to adapt the book for the screen himself.
In a statement, the production team said: "“Douglas Stuart is an incredibly talented and sophisticated writer, capturing his world and characters with the kind of authenticity, rhythm, vivid detail, and heartbreaking emotion that you rarely see in any book, let alone a debut novel.
"We are so excited to work with him to tell this powerful and deeply moving story in a new way.”
