Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke shocks Scots schoolkids with special video message

Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke sent Scots schoolkids into meltdown after personally wishing them good luck for their upcoming production of Mary Poppins.

Staff at Annan Academy, in Dumfries and Galloway, shared an amazing video clip of the actor offering top performance tips before they take to the stage.

Dick played Bert in the iconic Disney musical fantasy film in 1964 when he was aged just 39.

On Saturday the 94-year-old turned his attention to Scottish stars of the future when he recorded a video message for junior pupils at the secondary school.

A school representative said: "Yesterday we received a very special message from the legend that is Mr Dick Van Dyke, the original Bert, for our junior show cast and crew.

"We were so excited watching this.

"Massive thank you to Mr and Mrs George for organising this surprise for us, we are very grateful!"

Dick begins by singing one of the film's most popular numbers, Spoonful of Sugar, while stirring some sugar into a cup of tea.

He said: "Hi all you kids at the academy.

"You're going to do a production of Mary Poppins?

"I want to wish you all the luck in the world, it's going to be a lot of fun."

Dick added: "You asked me for a little advice.

"I once directed a grade school production of Mary Poppins.

"The trouble I found with some of the kids was that when they said their line they thought they were in the movies and they were off camera, so they picked their nose and waved at their friends.

"They forgot that they were still on stage.

"So after you've said your line, stay right in character and stay with it all night.

"God bless and have a wonderful, wonderful show."

A message appeared on the screen towards the end of the touching clip that read: "Wishing all the students and teachers of Annan Academy good luck for their upcoming performance of Mary Poppins."

The video was shared online and, in just a couple of hours, locals reacted in their droves.

"Good luck everyone involved."
