The suspected driver who plowed into a crowd outside an East Hollywood club, injuring 23 people, was kicked out earlier in the night for being “disruptive,” the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Seven people are in critical condition after the driver of the Nissan Versa crashed into revelers outside The Vermont Hollywood club at the corner of Vermont Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard at around 2 a.m. Saturday.
LAPD Captain Ben Fernandes told the LA Times that the suspected driver of the vehicle was thrown out of the club before getting in his car, where he mounted the sidewalk.
Bystanders pulled him from the vehicle and started assaulting him, police said. The moment was caught on video.
“From review of the video, he went up to the sidewalk further down and when he hit bystanders it was an intentional act,” Fernandes told the outlet.
“He was pulled from the car, handcuffed by security and then beaten by bystanders before being shot in the back by an individual from across the street.”
Police said the suspected gunman used a silver revolver and remains at large.
Capt. Adam VanGerpen of the Los Angeles City Fire Department described “a large chaotic scene.”

Locals say the area is prone to disturbances

Gary Hitchman, a valet parking attendant who works next to the venue, told the New York Times that it was “no surprise” as the area is prone to disturbances after revelers leave the club.
Another witness told AXN news that there is “often screaming and fights outside the club.”
Club issues statement about 'tragic incident'

Eyewitness claims fight broke out before the crash
18:15 , Rhian Lubin, APA fight had broken out outside of the club prior to the incident, according to Maria Medrano, who was working a food cart outside.
Shortly after, Medrano said, the car hit a group of people standing outside.She said she and her husband, who were both selling hot dogs outside, narrowly escaped after the car struck their stand, crushing it.
“The car stopped once it hit the hot dog stand, it got stuck there,” Medrano told AP from the hospital. “If not, I wouldn't be here to tell (the story).”
Medrano said she heard what appeared to be gunshots after the crash. “Everyone started running,” she said.

Couple working at food stand outside club injured

Francisco Mendez arrived at the scene half an hour after the incident after hearing that his sister-in-law and her husband had been injured.
The couple had been working at a hot dog stand outside the club when the car drove into the crowd, Mendez said.
“They were both hit and are now hospitalized,” Mendez told the Associated Press.
