Hollywood figures have taken to Twitter to express their delight at Donald Trump’s impeachment.
Trump became the third US president in history to be impeached by the House of Representatives on Wednesday night (18 December), setting up a trial in the Senate to decide whether he will remain in office.
Amid dramatic scenes on Capitol Hill, Democrats reached the 216 simple majority required to impeach him of abusing his position as president.
It then passed a second impeachment article, namely of having obstructed congress.
Jim Carrey, Cher and Don Cheadle are among the Hollywood stars to react to the news online.
Carrey posted a cartoon of Trump, with the caption: “That night, Donald had a very strange dream.”
Cher, meanwhile, wrote: “IMPEACHED PRESIDENT” donald j.trump,Makes RICH RICHER,poor poorer,& Will PURGE MILLIONS Of DEMOCRATS Off VOTING ROLLS. RUSSIA,RUDI,RESTRICTIONS, That’s trumps game plan. For What Does It Profit a Man To Gain The Whole [world emoji] Yet Lose His Own Soul [sic]."
And Cheadle simply posted: “Thoughts and prayers.”

While it is likely Republicans in the senate will vote against the measure, allowing Trump to remain in office, the move nevertheless marked a rare and grave milestone in the nation’s frequently high-stakes political history.
