Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds just gave £10,000 to disadvantaged Welsh kids

The new famous owners of Welsh non-league football club Wrexham have scored with locals by making a surprise £10,000 donation to disadvantaged kids.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, 44, and fellow actor Rob McElhenney were already winners in the eyes of Wrexham AFC fans when they bought the National League club in November.

Now they have given the money to North Wales Superkids after learning about its founder.

Margaret Williams MBE was “blown away” by the gift, especially as the charity has been unable to raise funds during the pandemic.

But, initially, retired social worker Margaret, 71, was wary of the donation.

She said: “At first I thought it was a scam as it all seemed too good to be true.” She showed the email to her husband but he had not heard of the Hollywood stars.

She said: “So he looked up their names and said they looked all right.”

The club confirmed the gift was legitimate. Mum-of-two Margaret, of Flint, Flintshire, said: “For people like Ryan and Rob to back us is phenomenal, we’re only a small charity. It’s mind-blowing. Nothing short of a true godsend.

“I can’t say thank you enough to Rob and Ryan.”

Among the projects run by the 22-year-old charity are an annual Christmas toy appeal and access to a caravan, for kids holidays.

Due to Covid, donations are down 75% and the caravan has not been offered to families but fees and maintenance still had to be paid.

Kerry Evans, disability liaison officer for Wrexham AFC, said: “I was absolutely blown away by the email, near to tears in fact.”

Rob, 43, played Mac in US sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which also starred Danny DeVito. Wrexham, formed in 1864, is the world’s third oldest professional team.
