Hollyoaks' Gemma Atkinson reacts as soap revisits Lisa Hunter's self-harm storyline

Hollyoaks is revisiting one of its first big mental health storylines next week, as Gemma Atkinson returns to screens.

The Channel 4 soap is re-airing the original episodes from 2002 as part of its big Hollyoaks@25 series.

As the show has gone off air amid the coronavirus pandemic, new episodes have recently been replaced with old classics, known as Hollyoaks Favourites.

Now, to celebrate 25 years of the show, the soap is airing one big week from every five years of the show's history.

Next week, it's tackling 2001-2005 and the chosen week of episodes focus on Lisa Hunter's devastating self-harm storyline.

Gemma's then teenage character began harming herself after severe bullying.

The scenes were hard-hitting, and had not really been done before in soap land.

Revisiting her struggles and the impact of the bullying on her mental health, the episodes will look back at the huge plot and see Gemma back on screen.

The actress and Strictly Come Dancing star took to Twitter following the announcement.

She wrote: "2nd time around for Lisa Hunter."

The episodes also link to the soap's Don’t Filter Feelings campaign, with current cast members Ruby O’Donnell and Haiesha Mistry presenting the episode to fans.

They featured in a similar storyline in 2017, tackling the topic of group self-harming.

Their characters Peri Lomax and Yasmine Maalik began self-harming with their friend Lily Drinkwell, who had started hurting herself after being scarred in a car accident.

Tragically Lily couldn't beat her demons, and in 2019 she died from sepsis as result of her self-harming.
