Hollyoaks fans question if Leah Barnes has been recast as actress 'unrecognisable'

Hollyoaks' Leah Barnes appeared on the Channel 4 soap for the first time in a while this week, as she begged her dad Ste Hay to pay for her to have dance lessons - and viewers were very happy to see her again.

But some viewers were distracted when the fan favourite appeared on screen, with many not recognising the actress playing her.

Ela-May Demircan has played the role of Leah since she was around five years old - taking over the character in 2011.

The soap star, now aged 14 in real life, looks so grown up compared to her days as adorable 'little Leah' - who viewers recently saw again when the 2013 Enjoy The Ride stunt episodes were replayed on E4.

She's grown up so much right in front of the viewers' eyes, having been on the show for so long as the daughter of the late Amy Barnes, and sister to Lucas.

But when she made her comeback this week, some viewers just could not believe how grown up she looked.

Others were actually convinced the role had been recast and that Ela-May was in fact a new actress, as they did not recognise her at all.

Most fans could see straight away that it was the same Leah though, who has been in the role for 10 years now.

Taking to Twitter, one confused fan wrote: "@Hollyoaks can you confirm if its a new Leah or not.... I'm so confused! Defo sounds and looks different but I don't know."

Another asked: "Is it just me or is it a new Leah on Hollyoaks?!"

A third added: "Omg that's Leah?! She looks so different!"

Others were just very glad to have her back, ready for some epic moments with her dad Ste.

One fan said: "Leah's back omg I've missed her so much!"

A second commented: "Ste and Leah I have missed them together."

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6:30pm on Channel 4, with the next episode at 7pm on E4.
