Hollyoaks down to three episodes a week from next month amid coronavirus pandemic

British soap opera Hollyoaks is to reduce its weekly episode count to three amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Channel 4 show usually airs an episode on every week day night but will now be showing two episodes less per week due to the ongoing health crisis.

The soap's press office told The Sun Online : "As we continue to monitor the current situation and follow PHE advice in order to continue filming safely for the time being".

The soap will air episodes from Monday to Wednesday from March 30, 2020, until further notice.

The press office added: "In the event that we have to take a break from filming we will look to revisiting some favourite episodes from recent years so Hollyoaks fans don’t miss out."

The news comes after ITV confirmed that Emmerdale and Coronation Street would also continue to film but air a reduced number of episodes per week.

Emmerdale will now air five episodes a week, while Coronation Street will air three times a week from March 30.

Meanwhile, BBC One soap opera EastEnders has temporarily halted filming for the foreseeable future and will only air two episodes a week from now on to ensure that the show stays on television for as long as possible.

A spokesperson said: "In light of the spread of Covid-19, after much consideration, it has been decided that filming on EastEnders will be postponed until further notice. The decision was made after the latest government update.

"We will continue to follow the latest news and advice from the World Health Organisation and Public Health England.

"We have also taken the decision to reduce the amount of episodes we broadcast each week to two, so that we can ensure the audience can continue to enjoy EastEnders in their homes for as long as possible."

The same move has been done for other BBC continuing dramas Casualty, Doctors, and Holby City.

It is unknown how long the shows will remain on hold as the pandemic continues.
