Hollyoaks' Davinia Taylor says alcoholism is like 'being taken over by parasite'

Davinia Taylor has opened up about her hellish battle with alcoholism, comparing it to "being taken over by a parasite".

The Hollyoaks star is celebrating 10 years of sobriety and says that these days, she doesn't even enjoy talking to a drunk person, never mind being one.

As she marked the incredible milestone, the 41-year-old opened up about her fight against alcohol addiction and depression.

Davinia told Hello! magazine: "I was in complete denial. I thought if everyone just left me alone and I could have a drink, I would be fine.

"It was like being taken over by a parasite and the only thing you can do about it was to go cold turkey."

In the early 2000s, Davinia was regularly featured in the tabloids as she was pictured partying with famous pals Kate Moss, Sadie Frost, Jude Law, Jonny Lee Miller and Meg Mathews.

She described the group as "going-out friendships" and said they've all moved on with their lives, although she remains close to Sadie and Meg.

Davinia, who played Jude Cunningham in the Channel 4 soap, said: "I don't particularly like going out much any more.

"I don't enjoy having conversations with drunk people - I don't find it funny or interesting, so I tend to turn up, do what I have to do and then go home."

The star is now committed to an organic diet and gym sessions, and says her stunning toned physique is all down to "biohacking".

She explained: "It means using your personal biology to hack into your best self so you can optimise how you sleep, how you think and how you perform physically and mentally.

"It has been a brilliant journey for me in understanding my past, how I became alcoholic and how I can avoid getting back into that cycle."
