Actor Trevor A Toussaint, who was best known for his role in soap Hollyoaks, has died at the age of 65.
Mr Toussaint portrayed Walter Deveraux, the devout shopkeeper and head of the Deveraux family, appearing regularly on the Channel 4 soap between 2018 and 2022.
His character became a key part of several major storylines and was widely praised for adding depth and warmth to the show.
His management said in a statement: “It is with deep sadness that we formally announce the passing of Trevor A Toussaint.
“His family wish to thank you for your well wishes and support as they take this time to privately come to terms with their great loss of an enigmatic, loving father, husband, grandfather, uncle and friend.”
Several Hollyoaks cast members also paid tribute, recalling the actor as a generous and thoughtful colleague.
Kéllé Bryan, Mr Toussaint’s agent who played his daughter in Hollyoaks, said he was a trailblazer who helped open doors for Black actors in British television.
The Loose Women star said on Instagram: “Been finding it hard to find the words to pay tribute to this man @trevoratoussaint. Gone, but has left such an imprint on my heart.
“I had the privilege to represent him as his agent for over 20 years.
“He played @jacqui_boats and I's father in @hollyoaksofficial which was a dream to be part of the legacy of the first black family on the show.
“Trevor started acting in the 70's a time when black actors were predominantly cast as criminals.
“He wore his waist length dreds with pride for over 10 year's fighting against every stereotype.
“Once asked to cut them in order to book a lucrative role he forthrightly said no. He broke many boundaries and made a pathway for others. RIP TT.”
He appeared in a range of television and film projects, including Death in Paradise and Dreaming Whilst Black.
Former Hollyoaks and Coronoation Street actor Nikki Sanderson said: "Such sad news, Trevor was a lovely man who took time to talk with everyone he met, he was a gentleman.
“He was always so kind with me. Sending lots of love to you and all of his family and friends. “
On X, Hollyoaks posted: “Trevor was a much-loved member of the Hollyoaks family, notably portraying Reverand Walter Deveraux with immense warmth, grace, and wisdom, bringing a lifetime of experience to the role.
