Holly Willoughby's 40th celebrations leave host in tears at This Morning backstage surprise

Holly Willoughby was left stunned on Wednesday when she arrived at work on This Morning to see the backstage area covered in decorations for her 40th.

On Tuesday, Holly admitted to feeling "doomed" at her big coming of age after co-host Phillip Schofield read a lost of things she should be expecting to happen from chin whiskers to sharing pictures of lemon drizzle cake and from switching heels to comfy shoes to turning the car radio down to see where you're going.

She later told a Geordie caller who had just turned 40: "You know what I think it is? I remember my mum being 40, so I remember my mum's 40th.

"So it feels to me like an adult age. I feel like it's the first time I'm hitting...like a time to grow up Peter Pan kinda time."

This Morning have gone all out to make sure Holly has a 40th birthday to remember with close friend and colleague Phillip revealing what they'd done as they all waited for Holly to come in.

With his camera in selfie mode and wearing a mask, Phillip took to Instagram to reveal that he and the crew were all waiting for the birthday girl to arrive as the backstage area was covered in balloons to mark the occasion and her dressing room had big light up 40 numbers in with more balloons in there too and presents lined up by her mirror.

Holly didn't have a clue what to expect and, as she walked in the door, they broke out into an enthusiastic rendition of Happy Birthday by Stevie Wonder, clapping her up the corridor.

An emotional Holly was left with tears in her eyes as Phillip kept his camera on her, with her declaring: "I'm just going to go in here to have a cry!"
