Holly Willoughby refuses to shake hands with This Morning guest after speaking to man with coronavirus

Holly Willoughby decided not to shake hands with a guest on This Morning to discuss coronavirus.

Holly and her co-host Phillip Schofield had just spoken to Connor Reed, 39, who has tested positive for the virus, when she decided against the polite gesture towards Professor Paul Hunter, who was sitting on the sofa.

Connor, who is currently stuck in Wuhan, is thought to be the first Brit to have caught the disease, known as COVID-19.

He told the presenting pair via video link that the virus presents in three stages - cold, flu and then pneumonia.

He then explained to a concerned looking Holly and Phil that he went to hospital when his condition worsened.

Connor then revealed to the ITV programme what it is like to be in the city, which is still under quarantine.

"One person from each household is not allowed to leave for three days," he said.

"It is actually quite scary... at the moment it is very dead and you can feel the atmosphere."

He added that while there is not much the government can do, on a personal level there are “lots we can do”.

Prof Hunter said: "I'm substantially less optimistic than we were six weeks ago."

Phil asked him how long it will likely last, to which the professor gauged it would carry on into the summer.

"Personally, I don't think it will disappear completely... hopefully by [the autumn] there will be a vaccine," he said.

He added that while he is not convinced you can contract the virus once you’ve had it, he added that he is “not ruling anything out”.

At the end of the interview, Holly quipped: "Thank you for being here. We won't shake hands."

"We’ll elbow bump," added Phil, as they all laughed awkwardly.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
