Phillip Scofield was left shaking his head at Alice Beer as she appeared on This Morning with her latest scam-fighting clinic. The consumer journalist joined the presenter and his co-host Holly Willoughby on the ITV daytime show on Thursday (October 27) to share her tips on how to spot at online scam.
It came after Santander issued an urgent warning to all account holders to help prevent fraud and dodgy scams. The bank also warned its fellow banks that a specific set of rules should be followed in order to prevent fraud operations where victims are tricked into handing over their cash to criminals.
But before they could crack on with the tips on how to prevent viewers' from being caught out, Holly was distracted. They were sat at the table near the kitchen in the ITV studio when the 41-year-old complained: "Oh my God, there’s a lot of black hair here," pointing at the table.
"I’m guessing there’s been planning happening for Halloween," she added before Alice said: "Oh my God, I really don’t want to go there." Holly continued: "It does look like someone has had a little beard trim on my table,’ Holly continued, pointing at the hairs. Can you even see it?" she then asked at the camera as they zoomed in for a closer look.
But as Holly started wiping them off the table, Alice shrieked: "They’re short and curly! Don’t touch them." Phillip then explained a moment from moments earlier as he said: "I blew it and that’s what you heard." As he went to blow them again, Alice cried: "Don't blow it towards me!"
"I don’t want your short and curlies all over the place," she added. As Holly pulled a face and made a disapproving noise, Phillip, 60, moaned: "Oh man," before shaking his head as Holly read the autocue in order to crack on with Alice's segment.
Holly and Phil quickly brushed over the comment, moving on to the chat about scams. During the segment Alice share the one thing to look for in a scam text which hints it's fake. The consumer expert said: "There's Covid vaccine scams going around this week. I'm eligible next week and I got a fake scam text this week. You don't have to engage. Be the active one. Don't engage; don't let them in the door.
"There's British Gas ones going around at the moment. This is the one I got last week. A debit failure. We're all fluctuating our accounts at the moment; it's perfectly feasible that my direct debit didn't go out." As the text appeared on-screen, Alice admitted she nearly fell for it, adding: "I didn't click on that. I nearly did; I'm not even with O2. But I nearly did it."
She then urged people to be careful and warned of the signs. "Sense of urgency, dodgy link, asking for information, dodgy email address - they are all warning signs," she said. "Don't get conned, please!"
