Holly Willoughby missing from first This Morning of 2021 as Phillip Schofield explains absence

Phillip Schofield explained Holly Willoughby's absence from the first This Morning of the year.

The popular presenting duo were expected back on the ITV daytime show today, January 4, following the Christmas break.

But Phillip was joined by Rochelle Humes instead of his usual co-host.

As they introduced Monday's episode, Phil welcomed viewers to the programme and quickly explained why Rochelle was presenting instead of Holly.

He said: "Holly is spending a couple of extra days with the family."

Fans were still quick to question where the 39-year-old was after she took days off back in November with no explanation given.

Days later Holly revealed a coronavirus scare with her children - Harry, Chester and Belle - had kept her away from her role on the show.

Holly also revealed last month that she almost took time away from This Morning over coronavirus fears.

Rochelle stepped in for Holly alongside Phil on This Morning (ITV)

In an interview with the Mirror looking back over the year, Holly said she was delighted the daytime hit series had helped fans through a tough year.

"Obviously when you hear people say you've kept them going it makes it all worth it and it's a lovely thing," the 39-year-old said.

"To be honest, I think we've kept each other going. We've always, always had that relationship with our viewers where we make the show for them."

Asked if she has felt pressure presenting a live show during a pandemic, 39-year-old Holly admitted she was "scared" and did consider staying home at one stage with her husband Dan Baldwin and their three children.
