Holly Willoughby causes frenzy after forgetting social-distancing rules on This Morning

This Morning viewers went into meltdown earlier today when Holly Willougby got too close for comfort with co-host Phillip Schofield.

The star sent fans into a frenzy when she momentarily got excited during the latest show, forgetting strict guidelines to stay two metres apart from her fellow presenter.

The duo have continued to front the long-running ITV programme throughout the coronavirus pandemic, adhering to to new ways of filming amid the lockdown.

Measures put in place at the This Morning studios have included guests appearing via video chat, as well as Phil, Holly and the rest of the team staying a safe distance apart.

But for one moment today, Holly caused a storm when she ran over to her pal and colleague.

They were trying out some experiments with their resident scientist Zoe, when Holly went to Phil to help him carry out the task.

"No don't get so close," he told her. "Get back, get back."

Holly was quick to apologise, shouting: "Two metres! Two metres! I'm genuinely sorry."

Phil tried to take the situation under control, saying: "Get back to your own area."

But it was too late, as eagle-eyed Twitter users had already spotted the gaffe.

One said: "Nice #SocialDistancing Holly and Phil ! @thismorning #thismorning "

One added: " @thismorning Hi, just wondering if you guys realise Holly and Phil are not social distancing in the studio this morning.. There is no way they are 2 metres apart the way they are sitting."

One said:"The whole country just freaked out at @thismorning and holly forgetting about social distancing @Schofe dashing away; they make my day."

And another added: "SO lemme get this straight I've not been allowed to see my pals for 10 weeks but Holly and Phil doing shit science experiments on This Morning while breaking social distancing is 'essential'??? not acceptable @thismorning

But some were there to defend Holly's mistake, adding: "Here comes the uproar and internet trolls. Holly just got caught up in the excitement of science and forgot the social distancing rules as she ran over to Phil. Awkward."

Holly and Phil have previously spoken out about their role during the health crisis.

Phil said on the show: "The government has classed us as an essential service for the time being.

"To bring you the latest news on the virus, to answer your concerns with our doctors, to offer useful advice and to hopefully lighten the load as only This Morning knows how."

Holly added: "We are running with a skeleton staff from now on and with lots of people working from home. All our regular behind-the-scenes services have been cut back to an absolute minimum."
