Holly Willoughby avoids handshake with This Morning guest after coronavirus interview

This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby decided not to shake hands after discussing coronavirus with a guest on the ITV show.

Along with co-host Phillip Schofield, she had spoken to 39-year-old Connor Read, a British man who tested positive for the virus in China, reports Manchester Evening

While that interview was conducted via video link, they also had professor Paul Hunter in the studio to provide some expert comment on the show yesterday (Monday, March 2).

Mr Read is stuck in Wuhan and is believed to the first Briton to have caught COVID-19, as the new disease is known.

He spoke about how the effects of the virus had developed in three stages for him - a cold at first, then flu and then pneumonia. He eventually went to hospital when his condition worsened.

In the interview, he talked about what it is like to be in the quarantined city.

"One person from each household is not allowed to leave for three days," said Mr Read.

"It is actually quite scary... at the moment it is very dead and you can feel the atmosphere."

He added that while there is not much the government can do, on a personal level there are “lots we can do”.

Meanwhile, Prof Hunter answered Holly and Phil's questions on the sofa about the outlook for the virus.

"I'm substantially less optimistic than we were six weeks ago," he said.

"Personally, I don't think it will disappear completely. Hopefully by [the autumn] there will be a vaccine."

He added that while he is not convinced you can contract the virus once you’ve had it, he added he is “not ruling anything out”.

At the end of the interview, Holly quipped: "Thank you for being here. We won't shake hands."

"We’ll elbow bump," added Phil, as they all laughed awkwardly.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
