Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield very amused as Alison Hammond interviews a tree

This Morning viewers were baffled over what they were watching on Wednesday's show, as Alison Hammond interviewed a tree live on air.

Fans weren't the only ones confused and amused though, with hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield also seeing the funny side.

They were shown laughing between themselves on camera, as Alison continued to grill the tree in an exclusive interview.

She was chatting to the tree because it was nominated for a European Tree of the Year award, and was the only UK entrant.

Alison had a tree whisperer on hand to help her get the answers she needed to her questions.

Of course trees can't talk, and with Alison not having the gift of hearing what a tree has to say, Holly had to translate and relay the information back.

Alison had a list of questions, from the highlight of its long life, to whether other trees were jealous of its status.

One question from host Phil saw a lack of answer, as he asked the tree how old it was via video link - despite it thought to be an 1,000-year-old oak tree.

Holly the tree whisperer claimed that the tree could not confirm its exact age, because trees don't measure how old they are like humans do.

But fans were more confused about what was going on, baffled over the interview - while many were left in hysterics.

Holly and Phil were also holding in their own amusement, shown laughing throughout the chat.

Taking to Twitter , one fan asked: "What is happening on #ThisMorning right now??"

Another said: "AM I THE ONLY ONE ACTUALLY CRYING AT @thismorning?! @AlisonHammond HOW ARE YOU NOT LAUGHING?!"

A third added: "What the hell is going on right now?"

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
