Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield in stitches over 'breaking news' gritter innuendo

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield struggled to hold back their laughter after making a string of innuendos on air.

The This Morning presenters could barely hold it together when Schofield pointed out a crude joke, after the pair were named after gritters.

Schofield told of how his co-host had been feeling left out after finding out that he had a gritter named after him called Phillip Snowfield.

He then joked that he had received some "breaking news," revealing that Lancashire Council had named their brand new model after Willoughby, calling it Holly Chilloughby.

Willoughby's delight was soon overshadowed when Schofield asked her: “What does it say on the back?”

Breaking into laughter, Willoughby replied: “Oh it says..spreading. Why did you have to point that out?”

It wasn’t long before the pair completely lost it and were left in stitches.

Attempting to compose herself Willoughby politely thanked the council: “Thank you, I feel very, very honoured. And if you see my gritter around the country, do take a photo.”

But the giggles continued as Willoughby chortled over the honking noise made by the gritter.

Whilst the pair are known to enjoy a good laugh, Willoughby was left in tears later on in the show after giving a football-mad 10-year-old the chance to be a mascot when England take on the Czech Republic at Wembley Stadium after he was registered blind.

Manchester United supporter Declan Bitmead lost his sight after being diagnosed with Steven-Johnson syndrome – a severe skin reaction which affects the tongue and eyes and causes the skin of sufferers to shed.

Schofield surprised the youngster by revealing: “The FA are inviting you to be a mascot for England’s key Euro 2020 qualifying game against the Czech Republic at Wembley on March 22.”

On seeing Bitmead become visibly emotional, Willoughby broke down into tears.

This Morning airs on ITV on weekdays from 10.30am.
