Holly Carpenter shares secret struggle behind smile in 'honest' tweet

Holly Carpenter has shared on her struggle with mental health, saying she's been on medication for years for depression.

The former Miss Ireland posted an apparently normal photo of her smiling on Twitter today which had a deeper meaning behind it.

Holly, who appeared on Dancing With The Stars in 2019, said despite the sunny nature of the picture, she had been crying.

She said she had kept her sunglasses on for the photo to not show her bloodshot eyes and added that sometimes depression "looks confident and happy".

The 29-year-old added: "Kept my sunnies on for most of the day yesterday because my eyes were bloodshot from crying.

"I’ve struggled with my mental health since I was 20 and I’ve been on anti depressants since the age of 24.

"Sometimes depression looks confident & happy x."

Followers sent well-wishes to Holly after the tweet.

RTE's Miriam O'Callaghan responded: "Mind yourself Holly and I know you have lots of people around you who will mind you too - thinking of you."

Mick Finnegan said: "Hope you're ok? Fair play for sharing your story. It will give others confidence to get the help they may need."

Pamela Laird said: "Proud of you for sharing! Far too much glossing over things on social media lately, that’s what Iove about you - you keep it real always."

Responding to another tweet, Holly said: "I feel a bit lighter after being honest."
