Holly and Phil introduce newest members of This Morning family as they adopt koalas

This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield introduced viewers to the two newest members of the show family on Monday morning.

Holly and Phil adopted two Australian koala bears in the wake of the deadly bush fires in the country.

While the two animals in particular were not injured in the fires, the money donated to the small charity caring for them will go towards helping those who have been.

The koalas, named Blondie and Glen William Clarence, were introduced via photos, with both hosts adopting one each.

Holly and Phil revealed the adoption cost them 50 Australian dollars each, encouraging viewers to do the same in the wake of the devastating bush fires.

Phillip confirmed his koala had gone blind after suffering from chlamydia, with there currently high infection rates with the animal in Australia.

Holly shared her own koala's injuries, with Blondie undergoing an arm amputation after a dog attack.

They said they were doing their "little bit to help" the country which has faced devastation and loss following the ongoing crisis.

It's reported over a billion animals have been killed by the fires, since they began late last year.

With huge numbers of koala bears injured, it's thought at least 25,000 have died.

Phillip said: "While they weren't directly injured by the fires, all the money from the adoption goes to help the new koalas who are struggling to survive."

On the decision behind the adoption, Holly said: "Lots of people don't know what to do.

"You think that's not a huge amount, but that will go forward and make a huge difference."

Viewers were left emotional last week and this week over footage on the show, as This Morning vet Scott joined those helping the koalas in Australia.

He helped treat some of the koalas with their burns caused by the fires, with many of them facing major injuries.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
