Holly and Phil down shots with Rich Astley on ITV This Morning

It seems like it’s never too early for an alcoholic beverage on This Morning - after all, it’s 8pm somewhere in the world.

Whether it be a cheeky cocktail or a splash of wine in a meal prepared by a chef, the show’s hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield are always happy to partake when necessary.

Today was no different for the duo as they downed a shot of Jägermeister with Rick Astley, who was on the sofa tasking about his greatest hits album.

The Never Gonna Give You Up hitmaker said that drinking the German herbal liqueur was part of a ‘ritual’, adding that part of the tradition is making everyone else in the room join in.

Eager Phil poured out the shots for all three of them and the presenting pair happily obliged to join him in the ceremony.

They said cheers as Rick spoke of his dream to one day play Glastonbury, before they all knocked back the shot.

"Lovely," said Phil, who seemed more than happy with his pre-midday tipple.

Holly, however, was a bit less impressed and made a face after downing it.

Rick was a bit taken aback at how quickly they drank it, with Phil joking, "Don't you know us at all?"

Explaining the meaning behind the drink, Rick explained that it became almost like a superstitious act after drinking a shot in Germany before a gig that went down really well.

He said: "I think we were in Germany doing a gig one time and there was nothing to do a drink of. And we like to have a shot before we go on.

"There was some Jäger and we had a shot and it was the best gig we’ve done. A really amazing gig.

"So we got into this superstition of we’ve got to have a Jäger literally every breakfast radio, TV, everything we've done."

This Morning airs weekdays from 10.30am on ITV.
