"Hollow victory" - Bristol City owner delivers damning verdict on Leeds United's promotion hopes

Bristol City owner Steve Lansdown believes Leeds United's promotion would be a "hollow victory" if the Championship season isn't completed.

The Whites have sat at the top of the Championship since football was halted in mid-March, with a seven-point cushion over Fulham in third.

The English Football League have confirmed that a points-per-game format will be used to settle the EFL tables, should the seasons be curtailed.

That would see Leeds United promoted back to the Premier League, with nine matches of the season still unplayed.

As a result, Lansdown believes that promotion in this manner would be "hollow" for Leeds and West Brom, with Bristol City hopeful of a restart with the club sat just outside the play-off places.

Lansdown said : "It would be gut-wrenching [to miss out on the play offs] but it'd be the same as missing out on the last game of the season and finishing seventh, it's the same principle.

"I just think that there's unfinished business out there and I don't think anybody should get a promotion or be relegated without the full number of games played.

"I think everybody agrees with that actually across the board and I know in the Championship all the clubs want that to happen and will vote for that to happen if they can.

"We fancy our chances of getting into the play-offs and having a crack at getting into the Premier League, I think from a Leeds and West Brom perspective, perhaps they're being brave by agreeing to it but like anybody else, it's a hollow victory if you don't get it by completing all the fixtures,

"We're contracted at the beginning of the season to play home and away against the other 23 clubs, we should try and do that. It doesn't matter how long it takes, we should do that before anything else."
