Hollie Doyle steals the day on Ascot Champions Day with her first Group 1 winner

Hollie Doyle stole the show on Champions Day at Ascot as she landed her first Group 1 winner as part of a double on the day.

Doyle partnered the Archie Watson-trained Glen Shiel to a 16/1 victory in the QIPCO British Champions Sprint Stakes to cap a memorable week in which she had already broken her own record for the most winners ridden in a calendar year by a female jockey.

That win came after she had landed the Group 2 Long Distance Cup on Trueshan, of Alan King, with short-priced favourite Stradivarius disappointing.

It was a phenomenal day for Flat racing’s so-called power couple as Doyle’s boyfriend Tom Marquand also rode two winners, including one at Group 1 level, steering Addeybb to victory in the feature Champion Stakes before winning the Balmoral Handicap on Njord.

Elsewhere, there was an upset in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes as odds-on favourite Palace Pier could only finish third under Frankie Dettori, The Revenant going one better than his second-place finish in last year’s renewal for French jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot.

Wonderful Tonight scored her second Group 1 victory in a fortnight by taking the Fillies and Mares Stakes for William Buick and trainer David Menuisier, the latter enjoying his first triumph at the highest level in Britain.
