Three people have been killed after a gunman opened fire in the Dutch city of Dordrecht, officials in the Netherlands have said.

A massive police operation was launched on Monday evening, with police saying ”multiple” people had been shot in a residential street on the southern edge of the city.

Dordrecht Mayor Wouter Kolff said on Twitter there had been "a very serious shooting incident" and that he was heading to the scene.

Emergency response teams were treating victims at the scene of the incident.

According to a police source, a Dutch police officer shot and killed two family members and then himself in the incident.

A fourth relative was injured, said the source, who could not be identified because the investigation was ongoing.

"Three people were killed in the shooting incident in Dordrecht's Heimerstein (neighbourhood). One person was seriously injured," according to the official police statement on Twitter.
