Holidays to Spain in further doubt as country confirms 5,000 new cases in a day

Holidays to Spain have been thrown further into doubt after the country recorded 5,000 new coronavirus cases in a day.

The Scottish Government recently removed its air bridge with the country following a huge spike in infections, meaning travellers have to quarantine for 14 days on return home.

Travel companies and airlines have grounded most flights to Spain, including to the Canary and Balearic islands.

Now holidays to the country could be off the cards completely this year after 5,760 new cases of the virus were recorded Tuesday and a further 4,088 yesterday.

The country recorded the most cases on March 29, with 9,159 confirmed with coronavirus.

Spain has had 310,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus overall and more than 28,000 deaths.

The region with the most cases is Catalonia - including Barcelona - with over 76,000, where local authorities have asked residents only to leave their accommodation for essential activities.

Meetings of more than 10 people in public or private are prohibited and nightclubs and gyms have closed.

Bars and restaurants have reduced opening hours and capacity.

The use of face coverings is mandatory for anyone over the age of six years old on public transport and many indoor and outdoor public spaces in Spain.

The region of Andalusia has also announced that it will be introducing new fines to anyone caught flouting the rules.

The fines are up to an amount of around £540,000.

Jet2 has cancelled holidays to mainland Spain until Sunday August 16, and holidays to the Balearic and Canary Islands until August 9.

TUI has cancelled all holidays to mainland Spain and Portugal up to and including Sunday, August 16.

TUI has cancelled all holidays to the Balearic and Canary Islands until Sunday, August 9, but anyone booked between August 10 and 16 can also claim a refund or rebook for another holiday.
